Senator Nelson Announces State Grants for Education

GRAPEVINE - Texas State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, is pleased to announce that several local school districts have received state grants to assist with programs designed to improve student achievement.

"These grants are a well-deserved reward for communities that have fostered higher graduation rates and an overall increase in student achievement. When our students give that extra effort to succeed, it is wonderful to be able to give something back, which is the real purpose of these grants," said Senator Nelson, a former classroom teacher who served two terms in the State Board of Education.

The Texas High School Completion and Success grants are awarded by the Texas Education Agency to school districts that implement programs that increase student achievement, improve graduation rates, increase the number of students who graduate college-ready, and reduce crime on campuses. Grants were awarded to: Watson Learning Center, $150,000; Fort Worth ISD, $599,947; Birdville ISD, $350,000; and H-E-B ISD, $67,967.

In addition, the Texas Education Agency awarded a $500,000 Texas Reading First Initiative grant to Castleberry ISD to assist with reading programs. Additionally, Fort Worth ISD received an $875,000 20st Century Learning Center grant to provide academic enrichment and a $527,319 Texas After School Initiative for middle schools. The latter was boosted by a similar grant to the city of Fort Worth for after-school programs in the amount of $1,013,359.

Senator Nelson represents District 12, which includes the growing communities of Tarrant and Denton counties and part of the city of Fort Worth.
