Veterans Affairs Panel Approves Bill by Senator Nelson to Aid Military Families
AUSTIN -- The Senate Committee on Veteran Affairs & Military Installations today approved SB 173, filed by State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, to allow service men and women to defer their property tax payments while on active duty. The bill now moves to the full Senate for consideration.
"Like our president I pray for peace, but if Texans are sent to fight for our country then I do not want them worrying about their property tax bills. I want their minds focused on the job at hand and about coming home safely to their families," Senator Nelson said.
SB 173 would eliminate late penalties on property tax owed to any taxing jurisdiction in Texas. Payments would be due 60 days after:
- person is discharged from active military service
- person returns to the state for more than 10 days
- person returns to non-active duty status in the reserves
- the war or national emergency ends.
Senator Jane Nelson represents District 12, which includes the growing suburban communities of Denton and Tarrant counties and parts of the city of Fort Worth.
