SENATOR NELSON TAKES OATH OF OFFICE TO REPRESENT DISTRICT 12

AUSTIN - State Senator Jane Nelson, R- Lewisville, was officially sworn in today as the Texas Legislature kicked off its 78th regular session, which runs today through June 2. She will represent the newly created Senate District 12 encompassing the growing suburban communities of Denton and Tarrant counties and part of the city of Fort Worth.

"Today I took an oath to faithfully serve our community, and that is a tremendous responsibility that I take very seriously. Every issue that we discuss this session will have a direct impact on our lives. We must improve education, jump start local transportation projects, make health care more patient friendly and affordable and stand up against those who are calling for a tax increase to solve our budget problems. These are our marching orders. Let's march," Senator Nelson said.

Senator Nelson is a former public school teacher who was first elected to the Senate in 1991 and took office in 1992 after two successful terms on the State Board of Education. While serving on the State Board, she led a campaign to correct more than 5,000 errors in our public school textbooks. She has had a key vote on the Senate Education Committee in each of her five legislative sessions. She voted against the Robin Hood plan when it was first proposed and has pushed for reform to the school finance system through legislation that dedicated lottery proceeds to education and provided state aid to school districts struggling to keep up with enrollment growth.

The first Republican to represent District 12 since Betty Andujar in 1983, Senator Nelson is also a key legislator on health policy. She has chaired the Senate Health Committee, authored the Texas Medical Privacy Act, fought to expand breast cancer services and pushed to make HMOs more accountable to patients. she led the interim study into medical liability and prompt pay for health care providers and is preparing to take the lead on both issues in the current session.

Senator Nelson owns and operates an aircraft component manufacturing firm with her husband, J. Michael Nelson. They have a grown son and four daughters in college and high school.
