Senator Nelson to Lead Interim Review of State Agencies

AUSTIN -- State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, today was selected to lead a group of Senators and House members that will spend the next year reviewing the efficiency of several key state agencies as the Chairman of the Sunset Advisory Commission.

"The Sunset process gives us the opportunity to put government agencies and their budgets under a microscope. We will examine whether these agencies are being responsive to the taxpayers for whom they work, and we will evaluate whether their services can be improved, streamlined or eliminated," Senator Nelson. "In these uncertain economic times, we need to be especially watchful of how we are spending the hard-earned tax dollars of Texas families, and I will continue to be a voice for budgetary restraint as this process moves forward."

Every state agency, board and commission has a sunset date -- a date after which it will be abolished unless the Legislature decides its services are still needed. To make that determination, a Sunset commission consisting of five Senators and five House members is appointed. Senator Nelson was chosen by Lieutenant Governor Bill Ratliff to lead the Senate representatives.

In all, 27 entities are scheduled for sunset during the 2002-03 biennium, including the Texas departments of Health, Human Services, Economic Development, Housing and Community Affairs, as well as the Texas commissions on Workforce, Ethics and the Lottery.

For more information about the sunset process or for a list of all agencies scheduled for sunset, visit the Sunset Advisory Commission online at www.sunset.state.tx.us.
