BILL TO IMPROVE CANCER REPORTING CLEARS SENATE PANEL

AUSTIN - Senate Bill 532, filed by State Senator Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, to provide access to treatment for women with breast or cervical cancer, was reported favorably to the full Senate today by the Senate Health & Human Services Committee.

"Cancer patients are at serious risk, and they need direct access to critical medical care without wading through bureaucracy. This legislation is going to go a long way in our fight against breast cancer and cervical cancer in Texas," Senator Nelson said.

Specifically, the bill authorizes the Texas Department of Health to provide treatment for all patients eligible for assistance under the Breast & Cervical Cancer Prevention and Treatment Act of 2000.

It is estimated that this effort could help provide assistance to more than 200 Medicaid-eligible women across the state. This bill will allow the state to receive a favorable federal matching rate for the CHIP program at the current 70-30 match. The initial fiscal impact on the state is close to $3 million, but the long-term savings in treatment and impact on these women and their families estimated to be far greater.

Senator Nelson represents Senate District 12, which includes Dallas, Denton, Ellis and Tarrant counties.
