SENATOR NELSON TO GIVE COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS AT UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS, HER ALMA MATER

FLOWER MOUND -- State Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, will give the commencement address at her alma mater, the University of North Texas, during graduation ceremonies that begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, May 13, 2000, at the UNT Coliseum.

"It is an incredible honor to return to this university that I love so much and address the first graduates of this new century," Senator Nelson said. "I'm sure this will take me back to my commencement and remind me of the excitement, and the hope, and the uncertainty I felt during this ceremony."

Senator Nelson's speech is titled "Daring to Dream" and will focus on the importance of setting and working toward individual goals, as well as sharing in the responsibility of our collective future.

"These scholars stand at a very special place in time -- both in the history of this university, and in our shared history as human beings. Their dreams and their life's work as individuals will determine our collective future in this new century and this new millennium. That's an important challenge."

Senator Nelson earned her bachelor's degree at North Texas State University, now UNT, where she was an education major and a member of the Delta Zeta sorority. Upon graduation, she became a public school teacher and went on to serve two terms on the State Board of Education, on which she led the fight to correct more than 5,000 factual errors in public school textbooks.

In 1993, she was elected to the Texas Senate, becoming the first woman to represent Denton County or Senate District 12 in the upper chamber. Senator Nelson represents Senate District 12, which includes parts of Dallas, Denton, Ellis and Tarrant counties. She is Chairman of the Senate Health Services Committee.
