Sen. Davis Statement on the Passage of Senate Bill 5

Due to the pursuit of a narrow, partisan political agenda by Gov. Rick Perry and Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst, the state of women's health in Texas took a giant step backward tonight with the passage of Senate Bill 5.

The passage of this bill greatly reduces women's access to critical health services and their ability to manage their own health care while further intruding in the relationship between a woman and her doctor.

During the debate, Senate leaders repeatedly voted down progressive efforts to leverage available federal funds that would dramatically reduce the number of uninsured Texans and increase the health and wellbeing of Texas families by providing essential checkups and preventive care.

In the end, Senate majority leaders chose to push through their red meat, partisan political agendas, sacrificing women's options and endangering their health in the process. Partisans like Gov. Perry and Lt. Gov. Dewhurst exhibited big government at its worst by putting their own political ambitions ahead of Texas women.
