SEN. WILLIAMS WANTS TELECOMMUNICATION FUND ENDED

Believes Fund Has Outlived Its Purpose

Austin -- State Senator Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands) announced the filing of SB 294 to eliminate the Telecommunication Infrastructure Fund (TIF). The fund was created by the Texas Legislature in 1995 to assist schools, libraries and hospitals with advanced telecommunication technologies, and funded by assessments collected by telecommunication utilities/cell phone company providers.

"This is an example of a tax which has outlived its purpose, and one which we should not continue collecting. When the fund was near its cap in 2003, it was determined no new grant monies would be awarded, but taxes continued to be assessed and appropriated to the Texas Education Agency for the technology allotment. It's simple, consumers should not continue to pay a dedicated tax which is no longer used for its dedicated purpose," said Williams.
