SCR 20 Allows Promises to Be Kept
Austin -- State Senator Tommy Williams (R-The Woodlands) released the following statement regarding the passage of Senate Concurrent Resolution (SCR) 20.
"I believe Texas is in a unique and unprecedented position to reduce the over-reliance of our public education system on local property taxes to fund public education.
In May 2006 the Texas Senate voted 31-0 and the Texas House of Representatives voted 136-8 to reduce school M&O tax rates from a maximum of $1.50/100 to $1.00/100 by the fiscal year 2009.
SCR 20 allows the legislature to keep our promise to lower school property tax rates by replacing the $14.1 billion of local property tax revenue with state general revenue. It is my strong opinion there is no better way for us to return the surplus to our taxpayers than by reducing local school property tax rates."
