Sen. Williams Files Bill Attacking Identity Theft
Statute of Limitations Would Increase
Austin -- State Senator Tommy Williams, (R-The Woodlands), announced the filing of SB 369 which will increase the current statute of limitations from three (3) years to ten (10) years for identify theft and other crimes involving fraud, deception or false statements.
"Identity theft causes havoc, and our current statute of limitations makes it difficult to investigate and prosecute these cases. Today's consumer must be ever-vigilant in their credit protection activities, and SB 369 will give these consumers and our law enforcement additional time to discover, investigate and prosecute these sinister crimes," replied Williams.
SB 369 increases the statute of limitations for credit or debit card abuse, false statements to obtain property or credit, and fraudulent use or possession of identifying information.
Senator Williams represents Senate District 4 covering all or portions of Jefferson, Orange, Chambers, Liberty, Harris and Montgomery Counties. Williams serves as Vice Chairman of the State Affairs Committee and as a member of the Finance, Transportation, Education and the Sub-committee on Higher Education in the Texas Senate.
