State Sen. Tommy Williams reflects on the first week of the legislative session
Texas Children First plan, action on member votes mark two important steps
AUSTIN - -- State Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, is pleased to announce a productive first week for the Texas Senate.
"We took two very important steps this week," Williams said Thursday. "First, all 31 members of the Texas Senate indicated their support for the Texas Children First Public School Excellence and School Finance Reform plan."
"Second, we changed the senate rules to make the voting process more transparent for the public. The Senate Journal will now reflect each member's vote on all substantive issues."
While reflecting on the Texas Children First plan, Williams emphasized several important points.
"Any successful plan must include substantial property tax relief while adequately funding public education and raising teachers' salaries to the national average," Williams said. "Not only does this plan restore and protect local control of schools, it will require public approval through a statewide vote."
First elected in 1996 to the Texas House of Representatives, Williams was later elected to the Senate in 2002 and re-elected in 2004. He represents all or portions of Montgomery, Harris, Liberty, Chambers, Jefferson and Orange counties.
