Texas School Bus Safety Week is Oct. 21-27, 2007

Senator Hegar Reminds Everyone to be Cautious

KATY, TX -- Texas School Bus Safety Week is October 21-27, 2007, and is recognized in conjunction with the National School Bus Safety Week which runs from Oct. 22-26, 2007. During this week, Senator Glenn Hegar reminds everyone to pay extra attention to school safety and the safety of our school children. The week typically runs the third week of October every year.

"As we observe Texas School Bus Safety Week, I would like to remind all motorists to be extra cautious as they drive around our neighborhoods, but particularly around our school zone areas. I want everyone be careful whenever they get behind the wheel, and as we raise public awareness about the safety of all our school children, to pay particular attention in school zone areas and as they drop off or pick up their children from their schools." said Senator Hegar.

"The national theme for this special week, 'Be Aware! Cross With Care," continued Senator Hegar "helps increase awareness this week and throughout the year. We are all reminded to be alert when driving in school zones at all time."

"Motorists who do not stop are endangering our most precious resource-our children," said Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Director, Col. Thomas A. Davis Jr. "These reckless drivers will face fines of up to $1,000, plus court costs if they are convicted."

If a road is divided only by a left-turning lane, drivers on both sides of the roadway must stop for school buses with alternating red flashing lights activated. However, if the lanes are separated by an intervening space or physical barrier, only motorists going in the same direction as the bus are required to stop.

DPS is encouraging school districts across the state to plan special events to observe School Bus Safety Week, which also recognizes the hard work and dedication of school transportation professionals, especially school bus drivers, who ensure a safe journey for students every day.

School buses remain one of the safest modes of transportation in Texas-38,000 school buses transport 1.5 million Texas children every school day. School buses account for less than one-half of one percent of all Texas roadway crashes.
