Statement from Senator Ellis Regarding Posthumous Exoneration of Timothy Brian Cole

"First, I want to extend my sincere apologies and condolences to Mr. Cole's family. The pain of losing a child, brother, and friend to such an extreme miscarriage of justice is beyond heartbreaking.

I want to commend Jeff Blackburn and the Innocence Project of Texas for tirelessly fighting for the innocent. And it is my hope that the Criminal Justice Integrity Unit formed by Justice Barbara Hervey will propose substantive legislative reforms before the upcoming legislative session to address the many flaws in our system including eyewitness identification error, which caused the wrongful conviction of Mr. Cole and the majority of wrongful convictions in Texas.

It's time to take action. Texans deserve smart on crime policies they can trust to convict the guilty and protect the innocent. It's time for the leaders of this state to ensure that our citizens have a system of justice they can have confidence in -- instilled with the fairness and integrity that justice demands."
