Press Conference on New Sales Tax Holiday
for Energy Efficient Products this Monday
(Austin) -- Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston), Ronnie Volkening, President and CEO of Texas
Retailers Association, and Cyrus Reed of the Lone Star Chapter of the Sierra Club will talk about
the benefits for consumers, retailers, and the environment from the energy efficient products sales
tax holiday which will take place later this month. Many of the energy efficient products and
appliances will be on display.
The sales tax holiday applies to Energy Star-rated products certified by the US Department of
Energy. Products eligible for exemption from sales tax May 24-26 include refrigerators,
dishwashers, clothes washers, compact fluorescent light bulbs, ceiling fans, dehumidifiers, and
programmable thermostats.
Sen. Ellis sponsored HB 1000 by Rep. Burnam (D-Fort Worth) which eventually passed as part of
HB 3693 by Rep. Straus (R-San Antonio). Sen. Ellis also authored the bill that established
Texas's first sales tax holiday on clothes and other staples in 1999.
