Statement of Senator Ellis on Death of Free Flow of Information Act

AUSTIN -- Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) released the following statement regarding the death of SB 966, the Free Flow of Information Act on a point of order.

-- -- --

"I am extremely disappointed in the defeat of the Free Flow of Information Act on the most trivial of technicalities. To fight for so long and to move this bill so far and have it snatched away on something that is completely non-substantive is neither good government, nor good for the people of Texas. The public's right to know has been compromised by this action.

"Passing a Free Flow of Information Act will remain one of my top priorities. This effort has now put the Texas Senate on record as in favor of this important bill to protect an independent press. Though today is painful, it is not the end of the fight. I fully plan to bring this issue back before the legislature next session and to gain more supporters.

"I do appreciate the efforts of all those who worked so hard to pass this bill, inside and outside of the legislature. Of all my colleagues, I want to specifically thank Senator Robert Duncan and Representative Corbin Van Arsdale, who poured their hearts and souls into getting this important bill passed. I look forward to working with them again next session."
