Senator Ellis to hold press conference on Vehicle Emissions Standards
Austin, TX -- Senator Ellis and Texas environmental advocates will hold a press conference on Thursday, November 30, 2006 to discuss Senate Bill 124 regarding vehicle emissions standards.
The federal Clean Air Act allows states to choose between complying with federal vehicle emission standards and adopting the more protective standards known as the Clean Cars Program implemented by the state of California. Senate Bill 124 will require the Texas Environmental Quality Commission to implement a low-emission vehicle program consistent with the California Low-Emission Vehicle Program. The Clean Cars Program, currently in place in ten states, includes tight limits on tailpipe and evaporative emissions of several air pollutants. It also includes a provision that ensures that a certain percentage of cars sold include advanced technology, such as hybrids and fuel-cell vehicles, to further reduce emissions. The improved efficiency of these vehicles also means consumers will save money at the gas pump.
