Senator Rodney Ellis Statement on House Tax Plan

(Austin)// -- Senator Ellis today released the following statement regarding the passage of HB 3 by the House Ways and Means Committee:

"We're Number 1 and, in this case, we don't want to be. Under HB 3, Texas will have the highest sales tax in the nation. Those who can least afford to pay will be forced to shoulder more of the burden of financing the state's needs, while those with the most will get an even bigger break. That is backward policy.

"The sad truth is that under HB 3 the vast majority of Texans will end up paying more while getting less. It cuts taxes for people living in fancy homes, raise taxes on everyone else. It goes from Robin Hood to robbing everyone. It raises taxes on more day-to-day necessities, closes few loopholes and extends the franchise tax to too few businesses. It is the wrong prescription for what ails Texas.

"Poll after poll has shown that Texans want the legislature invest more in our schools, not cut property taxes. We can invest more in our schools and create a more broad-based tax plan that spreads the pain and shares the wealth with our school kids.

"House Bill 3 picks the pockets of those who can least afford to pay more in order to give the wealthiest Texans a tax cut. It is time to go back to the drawing board, because Texans deserve better than paying more for less."
