Ellis, Geren to Hold Press Conference to Announce Casino Legislation
Legislation will let Texans decide whether the state should allow casino gaming

(Austin)// -- Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston) and Representative Charlie Geren (R-Fort Worth) will hold a press conference on February 24, 2005, at 11:30 a.m. in the Speaker's Press Room, to discuss their legislation to let Texans decide whether the state will allow casino gaming.

Senator Ellis will file this week the Economic Development and Job Creation Act, which will bring casino-anchored destination attractions to Texas. Well-regulated casino gaming in Texas is projected to provide the state with over $2 billion in revenue and create over 250,000 jobs.

Ellis believes that the voters should have the right to decide whether they want to have casino gaming in the state. Voters have been allowed to decide hotly contentious issues in the past, including outlawing an income tax, establishing the lottery and the allowing Texans right to carry concealed handguns. Casino gaming is too important of an issue to not allow the voters of Texas to have a say.
