Senator Ellis to Hold Press Conference at Local Academy to Kick Off Sixth Annual Sales Tax Holiday

Houston// -- Senator Rodney Ellis (D-Houston), Representative Garnet Coleman (D-Houston), other local elected officials, ACORN and other consumer groups will partner with Academy Sports and Outdoors for a press conference to raise consumer awareness of Texas' Sixth Annual Sales Tax Holiday. The press conference will be held Thursday, August 5, 2004 at 9:00 a.m. at the Academy Sports and Outdoors; 2404 Southwest Freeway, between Kirby and Shepherd.

The sales tax holiday will begin at 12:01a.m. Friday, August 6th and conclude at midnight Sunday August 8th.

Senator Ellis authored Senate Bill 441 in 1999 which created the three day sales tax holiday. The law exempts most clothing and footwear priced under $100 from sales and use taxes. The tax holiday has saved the people of Texas approximately $193.5 million since its inception in 1999, and is estimated to save taxpayers another $46.1 million this year.
