Statement on Attorney General Opinion on Waller County
Voter Registration Controversy

"I am pleased that Attorney General Greg Abbott issued his opinion today in the controversy surrounding the voter registration in Waller County.  The opinion states in clear and precise language that college students have the right to register to vote in the county where they attend college.

Twenty-five years ago the United States Supreme Court ruled that students who live in Waller County during the school year have the same presumption of residency for voting purposes as any other person who lives in Waller County.  It is unfortunate that the Waller County District Attorney has not followed the Supreme Court ruling and has attempted block college students at Prairie View A&M University from registering to vote.

I am hopeful that this opinion and the opinion issued by Secretary of State Geoffrey Connor finally put this matter to rest."
