Texas Legislator Sponsors Internship Program for College Students
Austin, TX// Senator Rodney Ellis (D- Houston) is sponsoring the Texas Legislative Internship Program for the 13th consecutive year. The Texas Legislative Internship Program (TLIP) gives higher education students an opportunity to become key public policy players in government.
A select group of 30 interns are participating in this year's program. The TLIP program involves a competitive selection process that recruits the best and brightest students from colleges and universities throughout Texas, the United States and from many other countries.
"I am very proud of the success the TLIP program has enjoyed," said Senator Ellis. "The program provides a unique experience for young people who wish to get involved in government. I have seen TLIP open doors for youngsters who ordinarily wouldn't have that opportunity."
Participants work full-time in Austin as aides during the legislative session. Interns are spread out all over the capitol and work for both Republicans and Democrats. All students receive college credit hours for their participation.
Senator Ellis began the program in 1990 shortly after he was elected to the Texas Senate. The program is administered by the Mickey Leland Center at Texas Southern University.
