Senator Ellis and the UT Health Science Center at Houston Host Free Community Health Fair
Houston- The UT Health Science Center at Houston, Senator Rodney Ellis, and Council member Carol Alvarado hosted a Community Health Fair today at the Third Ward Multi-Service Center. The fair offered free screenings for many different conditions including Asthma, high cholesterol, Diabetes and oral cancer. Over 200 free screenings were performed.
"This Health Fair is the first of its kind, " said Ellis. "I am proud to host such an event in SD 13. Hopefully today's success will cause this to become an annual event in our community."
Randalls and Coca-Cola provided significant financial support for the event. Volunteers also offered exercise sessions, healthy cooking demonstrations and face painting for children.
"Its important for all Houstonians to understand the resources available to them," said Council member Alvarado, "Events like this benefit everyone by taking health education into the community."
Senator Ellis' wife, Licia Green Ellis, thanks the many volunteers from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston and other health care agencies. With her is Dr. James Willerson, President of UTHSC-Houston, and Houston City Council member Carol Alvarado. Leland Ellis stands next to his mother.
