Statement of Senator Rodney Ellis on Phone Tax Legislation

"Senator Sibley's $100 million plan to eliminate sales taxes on telephone fees deserves our serious consideration. I do, however, question whether we can afford it. In the current budget climate, we are going to have to examine very carefully any legislation that takes money away from education and health care priorities.

"While every legislator would like to provide some sort of tax relief, looking at our budget realities, I just don't know how much we can do this session. Money is much tighter this session, and we have more needs than we do money to pay for them.

"Tax cuts are much lower on the list of priorities this session. Of course, I wouldn't say the door is closed on tax cuts this session, just that there is not much light coming through the doorway right now.

"I commend Senator Sibley for his efforts to ease the tax burden on Texas families. My colleagues look forward to reviewing Senator Sibley's proposal when it reaches the Senate Finance Committee."
